Episode 132

History of Servitude and Slavery in Utah: The Brigham Young and Orson Pratt Debates

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Master Peace, Ron Yorgason to discuss the Brigham Young and Orson Pratt slavery and race debates in 1850’s Utah.

These speeches, which have only recently become available, are a disturbing part of history, not only for the state of Utah but also for the LDS church.

While difficult to listen to, they paint a picture of the views, attitudes, and rhetoric that permeated early Utah territory. They also highlight the tragic enslavement of indigenous people of the era, which is not always discussed.

****Trigger warning: Hate speech***
